Burn Permits Now Available

Storey County Fire Protection District will begin issuing open Burn Permits for the Fall of 2017 through the Spring of 2018.  Burn Permits will be available beginning November 22, 2017 until end of the season in the Spring of 2018 (watch for public notices or call the fire department for specific date). Storey County Burn Permits are available for Mark Twain only.

Open burning is NOT allowed in Virginia City, Gold Hill, Virginia City Highlands or Lockwood without written permission from the Fire Department. In general, these areas are prohibited to open burning, with the exception of special circumstances. 

To renew a permit from last season or to request a new Burn Permit, please call Station 71 directly at 775-847-0954. All new burn permits require a site safety visit.

All parties shall follow burn safety rules:

  • Burning hours are 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. daily
  • Piles must be extinguished by 12:00 p.m. (noon)
  • Fires must be supervised at all times by no less than 2 adults
  • No burning during windy conditions
  • Burn only yard vegetation in small piles (2’ x 3’)
  • Burning of trash is not allowed
  • You must have hand tools and water source onsite.

You are required to call the Storey County Fire Protection District at 775-847-0954 and Storey County Dispatch 775-847-0950 prior to burning.
