Storey County Fire Protection District Begins Issuing Open Burn Permits

Storey County Fire Protection District will begin issuing open Burn Permits for the Fall Season of 2018 through the Spring Season of 2019. Burn Permits will be available beginning December 10, 2018 until end of the season in the spring of 2019 (watch for public notices or call the fire department for specific date). Storey County Burn Permits are available for Mark Twain and Painted Rock only.

Open burning is NOT allowed in Virginia City, Gold Hill, Virginia City Highlands or Lockwood without written permission from the Fire Department. In general, these areas are prohibited to open burning, with the exception of special circumstances.

To obtain a new Burn Permit, please call Fire Station 71 directly at 775-847-0954. Anyone wishing to burn this season will need to acquire a new permit this year. 

All parties shall follow burn safety rules:

  • Burning hours are 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. daily
  • Piles must be extinguished by 12:00 p.m. (noon), no smoke visible after 2:00 pm.
  • Fires must be supervised at all times by no less than 2 adults
  • No burning during windy conditions
  • Burn only yard vegetation in small piles (2’ x 3’)
  • Burning of trash is not allowed
  • You must have hand tools and water source onsite.
  • Burning in barrels is not allowed

You are required to call the Storey County Fire Protection District at 775-847-0954 andStorey County Dispatch 775-847-0950 prior to burning.

Burn permits may be obtained at the address above or by calling (775) 847-0954 or by emailing fire@storeycounty.orgto make an appointment to have the permit delivered. 

Only Permits issued this year will be valid.
