2019-20 Open Burn Permits

Storey County Fire Protection District is now issuing open Burn Permits for the fall to spring season valid for Mark Twain and Painted Rock ONLY. Permits are available starting Saturday, October 12 until the last day of March 2020. 

Reminder, open burning is NOT allowed in Virginia City, Gold Hill, Virginia City Highlands or Lockwood without written permission from the Fire District. To renew a permit from last season or to request a new Burn Permit, call Station 71 directly at 775-847-0954. All new burn permits require a site safety visit.

Before burning, you are required to first call the Fire District at 775-847-0954 to determine if burning is allowed for the day AND Storey County Dispatch at 775-847-0950 prior to burning. The ability to burn is determined each day depending upon weather conditions for that day.

When burning, the following safety rules need to be followed:

  • Burn hours are 6 AM to 12 PM daily
  • Piles must be extinguished at 12 PM with no visible smoke after 1 PM
  • Fires must be supervised at all times by no less than two adults
  • No burning during windy conditions
  • Burn only yard vegetation in small piles - 2 feet x 3 feet
  • Burning of trash is not allowed
  • You must have hand tools and water source onsite
