Public Notice for Open Burn Season

Storey County Fire Protection District will begin issuing open Burn Permits for the fall season 2020 through the Spring Season of 2021 starting Monday,  November 9, 2020.

Permits are valid from Saturday, November 14, 2020 until the last day of March 2021. Storey County Burn Permits are available for Mark Twain and Painted Rock only.

As a reminder, open burning is NOT allowed in Virginia City, Gold Hill, Virginia City Highlands or Lockwood without written permission from the Fire District. In general, these areas are prohibited to open burning, except for special circumstances.  

To renew a permit from last season or to request a new Burn Permit, please call Station 71 directly at 775-847-0954. All new burn permits require a site safety visit.  

All permittees shall adhere to the following burn safety rules:

  • Burning hours are 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily
  • Piles must be extinguished at 12 p.m., and no visible smoke after 1 p.m.
  • Fires must always be supervised by no less than 2 adults
  • No burning during windy conditions
  • Burn of only yard vegetation in small piles (2’ high x 3’ in diameter)
  • Burning of trash is not allowed
  • You must have hand tools and water source on site.

You are required to first call the Storey County Fire Protection District at 775-847-0954 to determine if burning is allowed for the day and Storey County Dispatch 775-847-0950 prior to burning.

Ability to burn will be determined each day depending upon weather conditions for that day.
