Welcome to Storey County, Nevada. Legends of the Old West don’t get any richer than they are here.
Storey County gained national attention in 1859 with the discovery of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, the largest known deposit of gold and silver at the time. The wealth generated here poured nearly half a billion dollars into the United States economy, helping finance the Union during the Civil War and accelerating the growth of Nevada and the American West.
The Comstock Lode transformed a remote mining camp into one of the most influential places of the 19th century. Virginia City and Gold Hill became centers of industry, engineering, and culture, leaving behind a legacy that still shapes the county today. Long after the mining boom faded, Storey County retained its historic character and emerged as a premier tourism destination, welcoming more than 1.6 million visitors each year.
Though the smallest county in Nevada by land area, Storey County has played an essential role in the state’s economic history. That legacy continues today with the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRI-Center), one of the world's largest industrial parks, spanning more than 100,000 acres. The TRI-Center is home to global companies, including Tesla’s Gigafactory, Panasonic, Redwood Materials, Walmart, PetSmart, and James Hardie, reinforcing Storey County’s role as a driver of regional and statewide economic growth.
Today, Storey County blends a rich, living history with modern industry and opportunity. Residents, businesses, and visitors enjoy close-knit communities just minutes from major metropolitan areas, offering the best of both worlds.
