Mark Twain Capital Improvements 2025-2026 Updates

We’ve put together this webpage to keep our Mark Twain residents up to date on capital improvement projects—those already completed, currently in progress, and planned for the future.

We’ll keep this page updated as projects move forward, though details may shift depending on circumstances and available resources.

2025 & 2026 Upgrades:

Roads

  • $3.8 million is planned for Mark Twain Road improvements in 2025-2026.
  • Includes drainage improvements on Martin, Sutro Springs, and Prospector.
  • Stop signs will be installed throughout Mark Twain to increase safety. 

Mark Twain Community Center

  • $1-3 million is planned for a building to remove fire trucks from the community center, enabling expansion of the community center's multi-use space.
  • The new outdoor electronic message board is under construction now.
  • Regular county staff presence at the building.
  • An office was added for Community Chest, Inc., community services.
  • Internet network expansion.
  • New outdoor lighting.
  • New internet fiber.

ZIP Code amendments countywide were submitted to Congress, and work is ongoing.

New high-speed broadband internet is coming soon. (Sponsored by Storey County in partnership with CC Communications, Rural Innovation Strategies, and Google).

New Trash franchise agreements:

  • 3 free-dump vouchers annually to all households (Works in Dayton, too). Residents can pick up dump vouchers in the County Manager’s office in Virginia City, NV, at 26 S. B Street.
  • Large yard clean-up dumpsters for qualified residents at no charge.
  • “You-Call We-Haul” free trailer drop-off and yard waste pickup (provided by the Storey County Fire Protection District).
  • Reduced negotiated residential trash rates for all residents.

Local Drainage Improvements

  • Edith, Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry repaving and drainage projects are finished.
  • About 30 driveway and street crossing culverts were installed along LaFond, Martin, and Sam Clemens.
    • 1,420 feet of 18” culvert pipe installed.
    • 200 feet of 36” culvert pipe installed.
    • $45,000 estimated cost.
  • Culvert work included excavation and grading of affected drainages and shoulders.
  • The county continues to seek grant funding to develop a Cost-Benefit Analysis needed to qualify for federal assistance.

Major Regional Flood Mitigation Planning

  • $50 million needed.
  • The county will request federal assistance for constructing regional drainage improvements, including detention facilities.
  • The county has submitted a Federal Lands Bill to acquire BLM property upstream of the Mark Twain Estates.
  • The county is reaching out to residents to seek cooperation for easements for permanent drainage ways.
